The Boot room:

'It’s 4.19 am. It’s deep summer, and you can see the first flickers of daylight seeping round the edges of the blind. I had been drinking last night, usually that helps me sleep through until the morning, a cold dark sleep un interrupted by dreams. But sometimes it wakes me up so suddenly, the fuzzy edge of alcohol seemingly making my heart race faster and faster.

I realise I had not heard my little sister arrive home, and I had noted her shoes which usually sat splayed by the front door, an indication that she was home, had not been there when I arrived back. I scrabble to check my phone, my heart rate slowing as I track her here. Home.'
